Why Does Infinity Mirror Create the Infinite Tunnel Effect? Breakdown of Its Optical Principle

When you first look at an infinity mirror, you will be amazed by its seemingly endless deep tunnel. This layered, boundless visual depth does not come from hollowing out the mirror body. It is achieved by clever bidirectional mirror reflection.

An infinity mirror consists of a **beam splitter (semi-transparent mirror)**, a standard full reflective mirror and LED light strips. The LED lights are installed between these two mirrors.
The semi-transparent mirror lets part of the light pass through and reflects the rest. The rear full mirror bounces the light back toward the front.

Once the LEDs turn on, light bounces back and forth repeatedly between the two mirrors. With each reflection, a small portion of light escapes outward, creating successive rings of light that appear to recede deeper and deeper. Repeated reflections stack together, forming the illusion of an infinitely long tunnel.

For a perfect effect, the two mirrors must stay perfectly parallel. If the mirrors tilt, light reflections shift and the infinite depth distorts. Even LED uniformity greatly impacts the final look.
Infinity mirrors are widely used for decorative signs, art installations and backdrop displays, offering a budget-friendly way to build immersive visual spaces.
